I just came across “I Need That Record,” the documentary film with appearances by Ian Mackaye, Thurston Moore, Mike Watt, Lenny Kaye (and more). This is a fascinating look at the death of indie record stores and how fucked the music industry is as a whole. This came out a couple of years ago but it was released yesterday on DVD (4/17/10).

Unfortunately, the act of buying records in indie record stores is something that’s going the way of the 8-track tape, Betamax and the dinosaurs: Mass Extinction. Buying records in an indie record store was an experience that bordered on the spiritual. It’s something can’t be replaced – not by technology and not by shit-sucking corporate record store chains. It’s sad, really, but if you can still remember the day your bought your first Gang of Four record in the local indie record store, and how it changed the lives of you and your friends, then this is for you.

You can watch the film in its entirety for one week only on Pitchfork (thru 4/25/10 or so) or you can buy a copy on the I Need That Record Website.
